7/8 - Norway: Lillesand to Svalbard
"Norway's landscape is written into the blood of the British Isles," announces Neil Oliver, presumably to explain why the team have nipped over the North Sea to explore the Scandinavian coast instead of contenting themselves with more familiar shores. To be fair, there are numerous links between Norway and the UK, both historical and geographical. Nick Crane, spending what he describes as "the best day of my life" in a helicopter swooping over great ice sheets, reminds us that the two countries were once joined by ice and that some of our landscape too was carved out this way. Meanwhile, Oliver tells the tragic story of how one Norwegian village was destroyed by the Nazis as a reprisal for the locals ferrying resistance fighters backwards and forwards to the Shetland Isles. But, of course, the most obvious and literal way that the two countries are joined is the 746 miles of sub-sea gas pipeline that runs from Norway to Britain.
